The March au pair meeting for Elmhurst was a delicious walk through the cuisine’s of the au pair’s native country. We sampled German potato salad, Columbian coffee, plantains and special salsa of Columbia, German rice pudding, American chilli and a very special Danish-Brazilian chocolate caramel cake and a few other delicacies that made us all thankful to get together and laugh and chat. Looking forward to bingo night in April!

This past Friday the au pairs enjoyed a meeting close to home, admiring the artwork at the Elmhurst Art museum and having a lovely dinner at Wok n’ Fire to welcome our newest additions to the au pair population, Andrea & Angela (from Columbia) and Linda (from France) and to say goodbye to Melissa (from Mexico). Welcome Andrea, Angela and Linda and bon voyage Melissa. You will be missed!

Is it about the family time, the football, the turkey, the harvest, survival in a new land or having a huge feast to fatten up for winter? Whatever your personal answer is, its a big family time of year for most of us, and during the hustle and bustle there are many au pairs who are trying to sort out our traditions. Thanksgiving is one of the ones they will have virtually no experience with and its up to host families to let them in on a few details. Courtesy of the Buzz if you are foggy on a few of the details yourself, here is a handy Thanksgiving cheat sheet.

Did you know 42.2 million Americans traveled 50 plus miles last year for thanksgiving in order to be with family members? If you really want to delve in to the history and customs behind this occasion you can check up on thanksgiving facts at History.com

Meanwhile, I hope your au pair and family enjoys the holiday stress free.

What do EF, Kids First and Cultural Care Au Pair have in common? All three are promoting cultural exchange in a myriad of ways. Read more here.

200 or so au pairs from Cultural Care turned out last weekend to embark on the annual scavenger hunt in Millenium Park. Although we didn’t win any prizes, my au pairs were treated with my favorite cookies from Caputos and lots of social time. We say goodby this month to Danielle & Christie from Australia. You two explorers will be greatly missed. Bon voyage!

Dozens of au pairs from all of Chicagoland with Cultural Care Au Pair gathered August 19th at Navy Pier to take a cruise on Lake Michigan in an 148 foot traditional four masted gaff topsail schooner named the Tall Ship Windy. Many photos were taken and the fresh breeze and good company were much appreciated on the clear summer evening. Even a few new au pair friendships were launched. Most importantly, sails were hoisted and fun was had. See more photos at Tanja’s website.

Fun for the whole family!

There are currently over a dozen au pairs living amongst us in Elmhurst, caring for our local children and absorbing the American way of life. They come from places as far away as Australia and as nearby as Mexico. They take a year off from higher education and careers in order to improve their English, live our lifestyle,  see the beauty of our country and to improve cultural exchange between nations. As a result of that the children they care for learn new languages, their host families have peace of mind knowing their kids are being taken care of in home and out and we all get to learn something new about the world.

What did they hope for when they came here for one year to take care of our children? What do they love about America? Did they travel and explore the country? You might be surprised by their impressions and insight!

This month I interviewed Paula Munoz, a vivacious and organized au pair from Chile who cares for four active, young boys in Elmhurst. She ferries them to soccer games, birthday parties, Chucky Cheese (when needed) and playdates, all while loving her life and her generous host family.

Where do you come from? What is one thing you want Americans to know about your country?
I am from Chile. Which is also in America, and has a lot of beautiful landscapes and history. People are very friendly and Chile is full of touristic places like lakes, deserts and mountains.

Tell us what you love about being an au pair.

Well, first if you are an au pair you gotta love kids, which is what I love the most about this job, and my hosts too! Its all about having a good process during match and you’ll enjoy your year.

What is something you didn’t know about America before you came here?

This is actually my third time in North America, so I kinda know some stuff but I didn’t realize how committed Americans are to every single sport and celebration they have every month. They really love their country and they are proud of it, which is a good thing! I thought they could be kind of cold but they are welcoming and enjoyable.

What will you do when you return home?

When I get back home I plan to relax, and take a few days off, then find a job and finish my career. Honestly nothing is for sure, I have to get there and see where things are at. Of course I have to get together with my friends.
Can you share a great memory about your host family or kids with us?
It’s hard to choose one, but for example, I love to watch shows and sport events with my hosts, and just hang out and talk. I can actually share a lot with them. As for the kids, well they are just awesome. I love to take them to the park, out for ice cream, or take them to Chucky Cheeses! I’ve had so many good memories with them that is hard to pick one! I just love that they(the host family) trust me with their kids and that even when I’m not working if I could help I’ll do it no questions asked. And they are always there for me.

For our June meeting we got together with a bunch of other Cultural Care au pairs from Chicago and all the suburbs to play soccer. It was amazing to see how many people there are in our area. I stopped counting at 100. Here are some pictures of the au pairs I know and love! Special thanks to Amy, Dorte, Kristen, Miceala & Karen for making the event happen!
