The March au pair meeting for Elmhurst was a delicious walk through the cuisine’s of the au pair’s native country. We sampled German potato salad, Columbian coffee, plantains and special salsa of Columbia, German rice pudding, American chilli and a very special Danish-Brazilian chocolate caramel cake and a few other delicacies that made us all thankful to get together and laugh and chat. Looking forward to bingo night in April!

Several of Elmhurst’s au pairs about halfway through the walk. They needed to stop and fuel up with candy.
Quite a few host families got in to the spirit and joined us.
These two coordinated!
Thanks Amy Jarjusey for planning this event and making it go so smoothly!
200 or so au pairs from Cultural Care turned out last weekend to embark on the annual scavenger hunt in Millenium Park. Although we didn’t win any prizes, my au pairs were treated with my favorite cookies from Caputos and lots of social time. We say goodby this month to Danielle & Christie from Australia. You two explorers will be greatly missed. Bon voyage!
Dozens of au pairs from all of Chicagoland with Cultural Care Au Pair gathered August 19th at Navy Pier to take a cruise on Lake Michigan in an 148 foot traditional four masted gaff topsail schooner named the Tall Ship Windy. Many photos were taken and the fresh breeze and good company were much appreciated on the clear summer evening. Even a few new au pair friendships were launched. Most importantly, sails were hoisted and fun was had. See more photos at Tanja’s website.
For our June meeting we got together with a bunch of other Cultural Care au pairs from Chicago and all the suburbs to play soccer. It was amazing to see how many people there are in our area. I stopped counting at 100. Here are some pictures of the au pairs I know and love! Special thanks to Amy, Dorte, Kristen, Miceala & Karen for making the event happen!
This weekend Local Childcare Coordinators from all over the USA gathered together to exchange information about their successes and adventures and to explore Austin, Texas properly. For LCC’s like me from the east coast & midwest this meant flying out of a three week rainstorm and trying on 90 degree weather for a change. Besides just the novelty of sunshine and blue sky there were well orchestrated workshops on every topic important to the business, and there were amazing BBQ’s and dancing and excursions.
Did I know before I left that I would see and smell 800 thousand bats waiting for dusk to eat the bugs? Or that colorful pianos were stationed on many corners waiting for the odd passer-by to accept their invitation? Had I ever seen an actual Texas Ranger up close? Nope. I also didn’t guess that I’d tour the Texas Capitol building with my new friend from Switzerland or that my British roommate and I would watch the royal wedding from our hotel room before dawn. If someone had told me the sound the common grackle (whose presence is as abundant as the pigeon is to us) made I would have laughed and accused them of stretching the truth for cartoons.
If I loved the job beforehand now I realize that the people are awfully loveable too. Take an extrovert and toss her in among 100 + other extroverts who also love travel and think that cultural exchange is probably the most remarkable impulse of humanity and you have a weekend that rates well above the “stayed home and mowed the lawn” variety. How many lawn mows until the International meeting?
As the crocuses and daffodils peak out and hint of the beautiful weather to come we notice our nests need to be spruced up too. Its a ritual that every cold weather culture celebrates and midwesterners excel at spring cleaning! So before you toss stuff in the alley/curb on any old day, look into the spring cleaning offerings in your area.
Elmhurst spring cleaning event is April 13th, 14th & 15th. Here are the details for what may and may not be included in curbside pick up.
In Lombard you can unload all of those old Walkmans and PDAs at their annual electronic recycling event coming up on April 2nd.
If you miss this date Villa Park has your back with its own electronic recycling event on April 23rd. Or, if you are feeling like the whole family could use a service day why not join the Community Prairie Path Clean up onApril 30th?
Addison families will be celebrating their spring with ballroom dancing, fish fry dinners and Easter egg hunts.
Happy Spring!

Yes, we have 4 new au pairs coming from France, Mexico, Switzerland & Brazil to live for a whole year in the American midwest on the prairie plains of Chicago. Will they make great bonds with their host family? Will they help children learn their culture and language? Will they improve their English? Will they get to know a great city and discover what makes Americans so unique? This is the goal!
Welcome to America and Chicagoland ladies.
