Is it about the family time, the football, the turkey, the harvest, survival in a new land or having a huge feast to fatten up for winter? Whatever your personal answer is, its a big family time of year for most of us, and during the hustle and bustle there are many au pairs who are trying to sort out our traditions. Thanksgiving is one of the ones they will have virtually no experience with and its up to host families to let them in on a few details. Courtesy of the Buzz if you are foggy on a few of the details yourself, here is a handy Thanksgiving cheat sheet.
Did you know 42.2 million Americans traveled 50 plus miles last year for thanksgiving in order to be with family members? If you really want to delve in to the history and customs behind this occasion you can check up on thanksgiving facts at History.com
Meanwhile, I hope your au pair and family enjoys the holiday stress free.
200 or so au pairs from Cultural Care turned out last weekend to embark on the annual scavenger hunt in Millenium Park. Although we didn’t win any prizes, my au pairs were treated with my favorite cookies from Caputos and lots of social time. We say goodby this month to Danielle & Christie from Australia. You two explorers will be greatly missed. Bon voyage!

Below is a letter from Dr. Cook of National Louis University. They are now offering au pair weekend courses. Take a look, and contact aupair.classes@nl.edu for more information.
“Dear Chicago-area Au Pairs:
National Louis University (NLU) in Chicago is introducing a new, exciting, and affordable educational opportunity for Au Pairs and other international students beginning this spring! Registration is now open.
Au Pairs can complete their entire educational requirement for $500 at NLU in Chicago over two intensive weekends this spring or next fall. There is both a 45 hour, one-weekend (3 credit equivalent) and 90 hour, two-weekend (6 credit equivalent) option available. Online registration is now available, but space will be limited in each of the four weekends offered this year. Interested Au Pairs are encouraged to register as soon as possible to reserve a space, and to take advantage of the early registration incentives being offered for this initial program opening. The first weekend course offered is coming up April 8-10, 2011 and the registration deadline is March 18. Late registration with a fee will be available from March 19-April 1.
Please see the attached Fact Sheet for all the important details including course descriptions, cost, dates, schedule, housing, and registration information. This information will be included at http://www.nl.edu/aupair/ ASAP. You can register immediately at: http://www.regonline.com/aupairprogram.
In order to initiate this new educational program, National Louis University is offering some great incentives to students who register early! There will be three drawings this month that all registered students by the date of the drawing will be entered to win, in addition to a $10 Starbucks gift card to the first 10 students registered by Feb 18.
The drawings will take place on the following Fridays: February 18, February 25, and March 4. The prizes include: Free overnight at the hostel near NLU (for those who don’t want to commute for the weekend); waived program fee; or $50 Amazon.com or Starbucks gift card. There will also be a $100 certificate drawing on June 12th for LCC’s and au pairs who have referred students that have registered between now and the date of the drawing, so please spread the word!
If you have any questions that are not answered on the fact sheet and eventual website, please feel free to email: aupair.classes@nl.edu<mailto:aupair.classes@nl.edu>.
Please forward this to any Au Pairs who might be interested in taking this class to help share this new opportunity.
Thank you,
Dr. Lora Anderson Cook Margaret Stemler
